Rossi’s Successful Season Opener

December 5, 2002 – Thirty Team Rossignol skiers converged on West Yellowstone, MT for their annual pre season training camp. W. Yellowstone, the hub of early season Nordic skiing was occupied by all levels of cross country skiers from throughout the U.S. and Canada who take advantage of the early season snow and the prestigious Nor Am events.

The week kicked off with a clinic in S.L.C. at Wild Rose Sports. Olympians John Bauer and John Aalberg gave a presentation on the 2002 Winter Olympics while Team Rossignol director Jim Fredericks presented the Toko wax clinic to a number of excited skiers. From there, the team assembled in W.Yellowstone for a week of hard training, photo shoots, learning about the Team's sponsors, and conducting clinics free of charge to the public.

Other events included two enthusiastic wax clinics hosted by Bangtail Bike and Ski and Freeheel and Wheel. The Olympic talk by John Aalberg and other Team Olympians at the Yellowstone Lodge was a real crowd pleaser as over one hundred people showed up to learn the facts behind the scenes at the 2002 Olympics. From there, seven Team Rossignol members traveled to Sun Valley for the annual Ladies Night at Backwoods Mtn. Sports. In all, these Team Rossignol events attracted approximately 460 people.

West Yellowstone was also the site of the Nor Am race events. With the best skiers from U.S. and Canada present, Team Rossignol showed they were just as good at racing fast as giving entertaining clinics. Team member Justin Freeman out skied both the U.S. and Canadian national teams to win the 10km classic event. In the sprint event Team Rossignol skiers Katja Ivanova and Brooke Baughman finished 2nd and 3rd behind U.S. National Team skier Kekkin Randall. In the men's sprint race, another Team Rossignol skier, Colin Mahood sprinted into the final heat to take an impressive third place in his first race of the season.

On the first race of World Cup circuit, Rossignol skiers Vincent Vittoz of France and Pietro Piller of Italy shocked the large crowd of spectators in Kiruna, Sweden by taking 1st and 2nd ahead of their Scandinavian powerhouse competitors. Rossignol skier and Olympic sprint champion Tor Arne Hetland was 4th. The following day, four Rossignol skiers help bring their respective countries onto the podium by placing 1st and 2nd in the men's relay and 1st and 3rd in the women's relay.
