October 4, 2005 – Just a quick update as I know you are all busy. Two inches of snow on the ground at Silver Star Mountain (you can view this via the “Main Street Cam” at www.skisilverstar.com {http://www.skisilverstar.com}
As well, there is a link on the SSM web page to the weather. The
winter forcast I saw last night says we are to have a mild winter
with lots of snow. What more could we want.
The weather is again a reminder for our outdoor staff to get things
buttoned up as you folks will start arriving here for the camps in a
mere six (6) weeks!! Time to make those bookings and get your travel
arrangements in order. For those who have not been privy to these
e-mail updates, the World Cup XC races will be held here Dec 10 and
11. The World Cup athletes are booking into our hotels and homes as
we speak and it looks like athletes, coaches and support staff will
be in the 500 person range. There will certainly be a lot of talent
out on the same trails you will be skiing on. Ever wanted to pass a
Norwegian on a trail? This will be the opportunity! (You might have
to catch them when they stop for a drink).
The Silver Star Nordic Club, Silver Star Mountain Resort and the
Silver Star Community will be hosting the famous Night Sprints once
again. This time, the very best in the world will be dashing for
cash. The SSM Night Sprints will be held in the village the evening
of Dec 6.
There is a new class of camp this year and it is aimed at the summer
athlete looking to stay in condition or improve over the winter. It
will be a skate only camp and the details are on the camp web page at
www.xccamps.ca {http://www.xccamps.ca} This is for never ever skaters
and for those that already skate and want to improve as well as learn
how to program their training over the winter.
Two of our teaching/coaching faculty members are into the writing of
XC “stuff”. Keith Nicol, a technical contributor to Master Skier and
TRAX Magazine has been very busy over the summer. You can view
Keith’s tips www.swgc.mun.ca/~knicol {http://www.swgc.mun.ca/~knicol}
Steve Hindman, a long time member of the USA XC demo team has a new
book out titled “Cross-Country Skiing: Building Skills for Fun and
Fitness”. ISBN number is 0-89886-862-9. The book is published and
distributed through The Mountaineers Books at
www.mbooks@mountainersbooks.org” target=”_blank”>www.mbooks@mountainersbooks.org
{www.mbooks@mountainersbooks.org” target=”_blank”>http://www.mbooks@mountainersbooks.org} and the e-mail address is
mbooks@mountainersbooks.org {mailto:mbooks@mountainersbooks.org}
The staff at the Silver Star Club Resort are working on the bookings
for the camps every day. Please book early as we want to make sure
you get into the camps and that we will be able to look after you
properly. You can book on-line through the registration form on the
camp web site www.xccamps.ca {http://www.xccamps.ca}
All for now. Keep training, stay healthy.
