November 8, 2005 – After capturing the gold medal in the 5km Pursuit race at the 2002 Olympic Winter Games, Canadian cross country skier Beckie Scott (Vermilion, Alta.) will not only be looking to defend her Olympic title at the 2006 Olympic Winter Games in Turin, she’ll also be campaigning for a spot on the IOC Athletes’ Commission.
As a representative on the World Anti-Doping Agency’s Athlete Committee, Scott has developed a reputation amongst her peers as a leader and as an influential lobbyist who is passionately committed to the development of a strengthened infrastructure regarding doping.
Elections for the IOC Athletes’ Commission are held during each Olympic Games. Nominees are voted upon by the Games’ entire athlete delegation in a secret ballot. During the Olympic Winter Games, the top two athletes with the highest number of votes are elected for an eight-year term.
At the Olympic Winter Games in Turin, Scott will be campaigning for votes alongside a list of 14 decorated Olympic athletes including Finland’s Saku Koivu (hockey), Croatia’s Janica Kostelic (alpine skiing) and China’s Yang Yang (short track speed skating).
