December 17, 2011 (Rossland, BC) – Jessie Diggins (CXC) and Jesse Cockney (Foothills) were unstoppable on Saturday racing in mild but fast conditions at the Haywood NorAm 1.4/1.6km FR Teck Sprints in Rossland, BC. Both were the fastest qualifiers as they advanced through the heats with relative ease toppling their respective rivals in the final.
Diggins has been unbeatable since the second race at West Yellowstone – she came second in the first race – and shows no signs of slowing down. Alysson Marshall (Larch Hills) who qualified 4th was second on the day while Diggins’ teammate Jennie Bender took third. Also making the final were Andrea Dupont (Rocky Mountain Racers), Marlis Kromm (Foothills) and Heidi Widmer (FNSC).
Cockney flexed his sprint muscles in Rossland as he qualified fastest with Philip Widmer (Canmore) in second, but Widmer crashed out in the heats leaving the door open even wider for Cockney. In the final the Foothills skier was in a league of his own as the real battle was for the remaining spots on the podium as Brent McMurtry (FNSC) grabbed 2nd and Kevin Sandau (Foothills) finished third.
On Sunday skiers will suit up for the 10/15km Mass Start freestyle races.
