March 11, 2009 (Duntroon, ON) – On Wednesday, day three of the 2009 Canadian XC Nationals at Highlands Nordic weather continued to be a major factor resulting in the cancellation of the remain races following the senior and junior men and women’s categories. The day began with “red klister” conditions and then the temperature began to drop with high winds turning the trails into a skating rink.
Before the cancellations National team member Stefan Kuhn – last year’s individual classic race National champion – won the open men’s 15km race by an impressive 49 seconds over Robin McKeever of Foothills Nordic. In third was \\sprinter Sean Crooks (NST) just two seconds behind McKeever.
American National team member Laura Valaas (APU) won in similar fashion with a 44.5-second margin over Canadian NST member Brittany Websterin the open women’s 10km event. Brooke Gosling of Foothills was third.
Next up will be the skate sprint races on Friday, March 13. Let’s hope the weather gods are smiling on the championships!
