Vote for the Sportswoman of the Year 2009

August 7, 2009 – Voting for the Sportswoman of the Year 2009 is currently underway. Every year, the Women’s Sports Foundation recognizes an individual and team sportswoman whose performances over a 12-month time span have been exceptional. Criteria are based on new records and world championships won.

Voting began at 12 a.m. EST on Saturday, August 1 and ends at midnight EST on Sunday, August 9. Winners will be announced at the Women’s Sports Foundation’s Annual Salute to Women in Sports on October 13 at the Waldorf-Astoria in New York City (USA).

Two FIS athletes have been nominated for the award. Two-time overall FIS Alpine World Cup champion Lindsey Vonn (USA) became the most victorious female ski racer in American history last season during which she also collected her second consecutive downhill and first super-G season title. The other FIS nominee is Lindsey Jacobellis (USA) Jacobellis’ recognition is the result of another banner season in which she earned her second snowboard cross World Cup title, and has amassed enough SBX World Cup wins and podiums to mark her as the most successful snowboard cross athlete, male or female, in the world.

The other nominees include Serena Williams (Tennis, USA), Stephanie Gilmore (Surfing, AUS), Yu-Na Kim (Figure Skating, KOR), Lorena Ochoa (Golf, MEX) and Kerron Stewart (Athletics, JAM). The 2008 winner was gymnast Nastasia Liukin.
