Malyshko Scores Hatrick as Zaitseva Wins Women’s IBU Pursuit in Oberhof – USA’s Burke 30th

January 06, 2013 (Oberhof, GER) – Steady rain and fog continued on Sunday as Russia’s Dmitry Malyshko was unstoppable shooting clean as he clocked a time of 32:22 in the men’s 12.5km Pursuit to claim his 3rd podium at round 4 of the IBU World Cup in Oberhof following sprint, and relay victories.

Teammate Evgeniy Garanichev (RUS) took second with a time of 33:05.0 and one penalty in standing while the Czech Republic’s Ondrej Moravec finished third  with clean shooting as well and a time of 33:12.8.

The USA’s Tim Burke posted the top finish for the North American men with a 30th place finish in 35:58.1 with four penalties. Cleaning his first two stages in prone, Burke was 3:35 minutes back from today’s winner.

“I was very tired today.  I just did not have anything right from the start of the race,” said Burke in a team release.  “I am looking forward to a few easy days before racing next week in Ruhpolding. I think all of us are excited to leave the rain and fog of Oberhof behind!”

Canadian Marc-Andre Bedard was 37th with a time of 36:25.7 suffering two penalties while American Lowell Bailey finished 42nd with a time of 37:06.8 and four penalties in standing. Fellow American Leif Nordgren finished 48th while Canadian Jean Philippe Leguellec rounded out the North American results in 49th place.

On the women’s side, Russia’s Olga Zaitseva took the win in the 10km Pursuit with a time of 32:01.9 and three penalties while the Czech Republic’s Veronika Vitkova finished second in 32:27.8 (+1), and the Ukraine’s Valj Semerenko was third with a time of 32:30.3 and one penalty as well.

Canadian’s Zina Kocher and Megan Heinicke finished 34th and 41st respectively, while American Sara Studebaker did not start due to illness.

The IBU World Cup now moves to Ruhpolding, Germany for the 5th round of the series with the competitions opening Wednesday with the women’s relay.
