November 9, 2009 – Ten years ago, the sports world was getting used to police raids as a part of cycling, distance running and skiing competitions. Now, as the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) prepares to celebrate its 10th anniversary, former chief Dick Pound is proud of what the body has achieved in a decade.
“If you look back at where we were in 1999 and I said to you: ‘In five years we will have an up-and-running organization fully funded by two stakeholder groups, a single set of rules applicable to all countries, all athletes and all sports, an international convention ratified by 130 countries under UNESCO…’ you would have said: …, what are you smoking?’,” Pound told Reuters. New Methods and Wider Testing
Meanwhile, in Tokyo, WADA has just finished a two-day symposium, during which Arne Ljungqvist, vice-president of WADA, announced that they are studying a new method that would allow wider testing of the banned blood-boosting hormone EPO according to CTV Olympics. “We will have a new tool very soon in our hands that will be much more efficient in the fight against EPO, including the various generations that are coming.” Read full story here.
