Kuusamo Hosts Nordic Opening

Who's Already in Shape?

release by FIS

November 19, 2009 (Ruka, FIN) – After the Beitostoelen weekend (Nov. 21-22), the cross-country family will be moving north-west to the north of Finland (Nov. 28-29). The FIS Nordic Opening, a joint World Cup weekend for all FIS Nordic disciplines, will take place for the eighth time in Kuusamo, FIN, November 27th-29th. The true season opener for Ski Jumping and Nordic Combined, this long weekend will be the first and only time before the Olympic Games in Vancouver, CAN, that all three Nordic disciplines will compete at the same venue, at the same time.

Around 320 athletes will compete in a total of eight World Cup events at Ruka, a popular winter sport resort named after the local mountain (492m) located 25 km north of Kuusamo. The Cross-Country athletes will compete, as last year, in a sprint race in the classical style on Saturday. The sprint course is one of the most challenging courses in the World Cup and ideal for a sprint in the classical style. On Sunday, 10 km (ladies) and 15 km (men) individual start competitions in the classical style are on the schedule.

On the entry list of the Nordic Opening there are some interesting names. For example in Cross-Country, Olympic Champion Kristina Smigun (EST) is planning her comeback after having a 2-year-long baby break.

Traditionally the Organizing Committee from Ruka/Kuusamo stages several live music performances and DJ’s to ensure great atmosphere throughout the entire weekend.

Who’s Already in Shape?
The past weekend, the World Cup athletes were comparing their current shapes in several FIS races in the North of Europe. In Beitostoelen (NOR), the national opening for the Norwegian Cross-Country skiers and biathletes took place with the added participation of several other nations like France, Italy, Slovenia, Switzerland and USA . Impressive there were the performances of Marit Bjoergen (NOR) who claimed victory in the free and classical technique distance races.

A positive surprise was the 4th place of the sprinter Kikkan Randall in the 5 km classic race. “That has to be one of Kikkan’s best longer distance races ever and it really bodes well for the upcoming season and reflects well on the training she’s done this summer,” said US Cross-Country Head Coach Pete Vordenberg.

The Swedish athletes were competing in Bruksvallarna together with some Polish and Canadian athletes in a sprint and in a free technique distance race. It seems that Charlotte Kalla, who won the free technique race, is back in shape as well as Devon Kershaw who showed his strength against the Swedish top athletes.

In Muonio, in northern Finland, several World Cup athletes from Russia, Ukraine, Slovakia and Finland met each other at the traditional pre-World Cup season FIS races. Impressive in these races were the strong performances of the Russian junior world champion Petr Sedov. He was racing the U20 category and won both distance races but with his time in the free technique race he would have finished third in the men’s open category too.

Below a summary of the winners from the FIS races in Beitostoelen, Bruksvallarna and Muonio:

– Sprint classical technique: Petra Majdic (SLO) & John Kristian Dahl (NOR)
– Distance race in free technique 10/15 km: Marit Bjoergen (NOR) & Petter Northug (NOR)
