February 1, 2010 (Trentino, Italy) – Sweden’s Jenny Hansson won the women’s race and Oskar Svaerd won the men’s FIS Marathon Cup, the 70km Classic Marcialonga. Hansson skied alone to her win, never challenged by Sandra Hansson and Susanne Nystrom, who finished 2nd and third. However, in the men’s race Svaerd, Jerry Ahrlin (SWE) and Joergen Aukland skied together until the last, brutal uphill to the finish line in Cavalese.
There, Svaerd began his sprint, and only Ahrlin was able to match him. But Svaerd had the most power and won the race quite easily. “It was a tough race, and we tried to have a good pace. I’m in good shape, but there are so many fast skiers around so you never know. I have always wanted to win the Marcialonga, and now I finally reached my goal – to win here”, said Oskar Svaerd.
The top U.S. finishers of the 70km race were Cory-Peter Berg from Grand Marais, MN, who placed 644th with a time of 4:13:40 and William Bothe of Park City, UT in a time of 4:14:02 in 652nd place. The top Canadian finishers of the 70km race were Phil Shaw, of Rosemere, Quebec, 102rd, Kerrie Fabius of Thunder(Bay?), in 730th, and Cindy Koo, of Canmore, Alberta, in 3,572nd.
