March 09, 2014 (Pokljuka, SLO) – American Tim Burke delivered a strong race placing 7th in the men’s 15km Mass Start with two penalties at 58.6s behind today’s winner Bjoern Ferry (SWE) who shot clean for his second victory in Pokljuka having won the sprint on the opening day. Martin Fourcade (FRA), the World Cup leader, was second at 4.7s back also shooting clean, while Evgeny Ustyugov (RUS) was third at 12.5s behind with a perfect day on the range as well.

“It was great to be back in the mix today fighting for a podium,” said Burke. “Of course I was disappointed with my two penalties in the last stage, but that’s just the way biathlon goes sometimes. I am feeling better and better with each race, so I am excited to see what next week brings.”

Burke’s teammate Lowell Bailey suffered four penalties finishing 20th at 2:10.9 back while Canada’s Brendan Green was one spot behind him in 21st with three penalties at 2:24.3 back.

“I felt good throughout the race and just had bad luck in the third shooting,” said Bailey. “I have no excuses why I missed; the wind was calm, I was in control and stable in my shooting position, but I just couldn’t get them to fall. It was a great opportunity and I’m definitely pretty bummed that I couldn’t capitalize on the good start. Now it’s all about refocusing and moving on to the next World Cup. Congrats to Tim for solid seventh place!”

Ustyugov was the early leader but Daniel Boehm (Ger) took over while Fourcade and Norway’s Emil Hegle Svendsen were not far behind as was Ferry. Svendsen and Fourcade both cleaned the first standing session and took over the lead but following close behind were Ferry, Burke, Boehm and Ustyugov.
