FIS Committee Updates from Cross-Country Skiing

June 05, 2014 (Barcelona, Spain) – During its meeting, the Cross-Country Committee had presentations from the Sub-Committees for World Cup, Popular Skiing, Development, Rollerski, Rules and Control, as well as the Youth and Ladies. Many of the proposals brought forward by the Sub-Committees were recommended for submitting to the FIS Council for approval by the Cross-Country Committee.

Major items proposed to the FIS Council were the World Cup calendars through to the 2017/18 season, along with race format issues such as the renewal of the prologue to start the Tour de Ski, along with reducing ski exchanges during long distance competitions. Roller Skiing and Popular Skiing proposals were passed in regard to allocating FIS points to their competitors.

The Rules and Control Sub-Committee’s proposals included false start rules clarifications and penalties given for false starts (written reprimand) to control the rise in intentional false starting.

The Ladies Sub-Committee Chair Gabriela Paruzzi (ITA) presented the major discussion topics, in particular the return to competition after pregnancy and entering the work force upon retirement from World Cup career.

Attendees also heard presentations from Cross-Country Canada regarding its hosting the 2016 Tour of Canada, along with the four candidates for the 2019 FIS Nordic World Ski Championships.

The Committee also heard from the Organising Committee from Almaty for the 2015 JWSC/U23 who gave an update on their preparation for the upcoming FIS Nordic Junior World Ski Championships.

Falun 2015 made a presentation about the FIS Nordic World Ski Championships. All major projects have been completed and it is now just time for fine-tuning through the summer months.

Lillehammer 2016 informed the Committee about the Youth Olympic Games concept and preparations, and Lahti 2017 and PyeongChang 2018 also reported on their progress.
