Austrian XC Skier Harald Wurm Under Investigation for Doping

September 23, 2015 (Salzburg, Austria) – Austrian cross-country skier Harald Wurm is being investigated for a suspected doping offence reports AP. On Sept. 21, the Austrian anti-doping agency, Nationalen Anti-Doping Agentur Austria (NADA), confirmed that the 31-year-old skier is being investigated by police. NADA is aware of the case and is cooperating with authorities said spokesman, David Muller.

In 2014, Austria enacted legislation to make doping a criminal offence following the ejection of their cross-country skier, Johannes Duerr, from the Sochi Olympics for using the banned red blood cell booster EPO (erythropoietin).

Wurm won the U-23 world championship in 2006 and has four top-10 World Cup finishes. He competed in the sprint events at the 2006 and 2014 Olympics, finishing 24th and 23rd, respectively. Wurm was also part of the Austrian team that finished seventh at the 2013 Nordic World Championships in Val di Fiemme, Italy.

The Austrian biathlon and cross-country teams were caught up in a blood doping scandal at the 2006 Turin Olympics, when Italian police raided the the team’s lodging near Turin and seized blood doping equipment and other substances. While no Austrians tested positive at the Turin Games, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) later banned several for life.
