NCAA Div. I XC – Middlebury Carnival / EISA Championships – Dartmouth First, UVM Second, Middlebury Third

by skitrax.com

March 01, 2010 (Hancock, VT) – The results from the Middlebury Carnival, the last Eastern collegiate Carnival of the season and the Eastern Intercollegiate Skiing Championships, was a summation of the 2010 season: Dartmouth took first, UVM second, and Middlebury and UNH duked it out for third.

The day was beautiful, with sun and warm temperatures. Some racers and fans looked forward to spring, and a reprieve from traveling and racing every weekend.  But for others, especially the Seniors, the moment was bittersweet. The pressure and travel has ended, but so has the fun and camaraderie which are so much a part of the Carnival circuit.

But every team, every athlete, fought for an upset, for a win, for every point possible. The University of Vermont’s Franz Bernstein crushed the competition in the 20k Skate Event with a time of 59:40:00. Second was Colby’s Wyatt Fereday, at 1:01:00, followed by Middlebury’s Patrick Johnson in 1:11:00, despite breaking a ski. For the women it was Dartmouth’s Ida Sargent who took the lead in the Women’s 15k Skate with a 50:21:00, followed by her teammates Rosie Brennan and Sophie Caldwell at 50:39:00 and 50:42:00 respectively.

Including the points from the alpine competitions, the final tally was Dartmouth with 846 points, the University of Vermont with 806 points, and Middlebury with 741 points. The University of New Hampshire took fourth and St. Lawrence fifth with 734 and 610 points respectively.

Division I NCAA’s will be hosted by the University of Colorado at Steamboat Springs, CO, March 10-13th. Dartmouth, while winning every Carnival, will be challenged by RMISA Champions and NCAA hosts, CU.
