May 08, 2016 – A Russian whistleblower has told 60 Minutes about four Russian gold medallists who were taking steroids at the 2014 Sochi Winter Olympics reports CBS. More details will be revealed this evening, Sunday, May 8, on 60 Minutes at 7 pm. ET/PT.
The information comes from Vitaly Stepanov, a former official with the Russian Anti-Doping Agency (RUSADA) and from Grigory Rodchenkov, who ran Russia’s drug testing lab. Stepanov and Rodchenkov are now exiles in the USA. Stepanov and his wife Yuliya, a former track star on the Russian team, exposed the state-sponsored doping prevalent in Russia; this led to the team being suspended from international competition.
Rodchenkov will apparently speak about making positive doping tests “disappear.” This prompted reaction from Travis Tygart, head of the United States Anti Doping Agency, USADA That, “If it’s a devastating blow to the Olympic values and clearly the final nail in the coffin for Russia’s track and field.”
It is still unclear if the Russian track and field team will be allowed to compete at the 2016 Rio Olympics. Dick Pound says that it will be very hard to trust any Russian athlete in Rio. Pound, a Canadian, recently chaired an independent commission that investigated claims of systemic doping in Russian athletics. See our previous reporting on this here.
