June 19, 2016 – The FIS Council held its spring Meetings during the FIS Congress Week in Cancun (MEX) from June 6-11. The FIS Council confirmed the calendar for the FIS Cross-Country World Cup presented by Viessmann for the 2016/17 season.
Traditional start of the season
Traditionally, the FIS Cross-Country World Cup season will get underway in Ruka, Finland from November 26-27, 2016. A 3-day tour will take place one week later in Lillehammer, NOR and will feature classic sprint, interval start free technique and classic pursuit races. After these two weekends in Scandinavia, the FIS Cross-Country World Cup will then move to Central Europe with a traditional stop in Davos (SUI). After the cancelation due to lack of snow in December 2014 La Clusaz (FRA), is back on the World Cup calendar just before Christmas with skiathlon and relay events.
2nd decade of the FIS Tour de Ski
After the 10th edition of the FIS Tour de Ski last winter, new decade of the toughest Cross-Country competition starts on 31st December in Val Mustair, Switzerland. The birthplace of Dario Cologna will host two competitions – sprint free and mass start classic. The Tour then travels to Oberstdorf, Germany for skiathlon and classic interval start competitions. After Oberstdorf the Tour is going to Italy. On 6th January Toblach will host distance competitions in free technique. The FIS Tour de Ski will conclude in Val di Fiemme as has become tradition with a mass start competition in classic on 7th and the Final Climb on 8th January.
New and traditional venues
After the FIS Tour de Ski it will be time for sprint specialists. FIS Cross-Country World Cup will return to Toblach for sprint and team sprint in free technique. For the first time ever, World’s best Cross-Country skiers will compete in Ulricehamn, Sweden. The venue near Gothenburg will host classic technique interval start competitions and relay from 21st – 22nd January. The Swedish block will then continue with competitions in Falun on the last weekend of January. From 3rd to 5th February PyeongChang, Korea is going to host the pre-Olympic test. Three competitions in three days will be sprint classic, skiathlon and team sprint free technique.
The final test before the FIS Nordic World Ski Championships 2017 in Lahti is going to take place in Otepää, Estonia from 18th – 19th February 2017. Sprint free technique is scheduled on 18th February, interval start in classic technique is set for 19th February.
From 21st February to 5th March Lahti in Finland will set the background for the FIS Nordic World Ski Championships.
After the World Championships the FIS Cross-Country World Cup resumes in Drammen and Oslo on 8th, 11th and 12th March 2017.
World Cup Final in Russia
For the first time ever the FIS Cross-Country World Cup will be concluded with the World Cup Final in Tyumen, Russia. Four-days tour is scheduled from 16th to 19th March.
FIS Nordic Junior World Ski Championships 2017 in Park City (USA)
Junior and U23 athletes will compete in their season highlight in Park City (USA) from 30th January – 5th February 2017.
