February 03, 2017 – Calgary took another step towards making an official bid to host the 2026 Winter Olympic and Paralympic Games on Monday, January 20. The Calgary Bid Exploration Committee (CBEC) presented a status report to Calgary City Council, which suggested that both the Provincial and Federal governments are interested in proceeding with the bid. The 17-member CBEC is headed by former Calgary police chief and politician Rick Hanson, and has been tasked with studying facilities, security, costs, public engagement and government support for the bid. Calgary City Council has set June 30th, 2017 as the deadline for CBEC’s final report and for a decision on whether the city could make the bid. Official bids are not due to the International Olympic Committee until 2018.
