Biathlon Alberta Hires Matthias Ahrens as New Head Coach

April 20, 2019 (Canmore/Calgary, AB) – Biathlon Alberta is proud to welcome the former Biathlon Canada Head Coach, Matthias Ahrens, as the new BATC Head Coach. Ahrens left Biathlon Canada at the beginning of April after being the Senior National Teams Head Coach since 2012. Biathlon Canada won medals at World Cups and World Championships under his guidance. Ahrens is looking forward to his new position where his main goal will be to work with younger athletes and help them to become the next generation of competitive athletes that will represent Canada on an international stage.

Biathlon Alberta’s President, Karin Kaarsoo, is excited about their new coach and said, “Matthias’s many years of experience leading the Canadian National team will be a great advantage for the developing athletes at the BATC. We also look forward to his mentorship of coaches around the province.”

After being on the road for 6 months of the year during his 15 years with Biathlon Canada, Ahrens is looking forward to spending more time with his family in Canmore. The training for the 2019/20 season will start mid-May. Being motivated to work with the new team he said, “Growing the popularity of biathlon has to happen on different levels. My experience and success gained at the World Cup level will now benefit our next generation. It is my goal to foster the passion and performance in young athletes to reach their potential.”
