April 02, 2015 (Boulder, CO) – Fresh off winning the program’s 20th National Championship, the Rocky Mountain Intercollegiate Ski Association named Bruce Cranmer the Nordic Coach of the Year and senior Rune Oedegaard the Men’s Nordic Athlete of the Year for the 2015 season.
Cranmer again led his Nordic squads to another outstanding season for the Buffaloes, as his men’s and women’s squads racked up more points than any other Nordic team in the RMISA regular season, at the RMISA Championships and the NCAA Championships, helping the Buffs to team victories in all three. The Buffs were at their best at the end of the season, as five of the six skiers representing the Buffaloes at the NCAA Championship all earned two All-America honors. The men’s Nordic duo of Oedegaard and Mads Stroem finished 1-2 in nine of the 10 races leading up to the NCAA Championships and both took home two top five finishes there, integral in the Buffs run to the Championship.
CU’s women’s Nordic squad, comprised of three freshmen and three sophomores, had stellar results all season and freshmen Petra Hyncicova and Ane Johnsen along with sophomore Maja Solbakken each had outstanding performances at the NCAA Championships, all three finishing in the top 10 of both races.
The women scored 153 poitns in the two races, matching CU’s men’s team and enabling the Buffs to win the mythical Nordic national championship, scoring 35 points more than second place Utah, 76 points more than third place New Mexico and more than 100 points ahead of the other 18 teams at NCAAs.
Oedegaard capped off the most dominant career by a men’s skier in program history with yet another stellar season in 2015. He won five races, three classic races and two freestyle races, and was second another four times to Stroem as the duo finished 1-2 in nine of the first 10 races of the season. Oedegaard finished third in both races at the NCAA Championships, earning two first-team All-America honors. He had 11 podium appearances in his 12 races, was the RMISA Men’s Nordic MVP and first-team All-RMISA. He was the top qualifier out of the RMISA and the top seeded skier in both disciplines for the NCAA Championships.
He finished his career with 19 race victories and 36 podium appearances. The 36 podiums are the most in CU history and 19 wins are most by any male skier in CU history and second most all-time (24 by Maria Grevsgaard). He was a seven-time All-American, including five first-team honors, and a five time RMISA Individual Champion. He also maintains a 3.6 GPA, graduated last fall with a degree in Business and is obtaining his masters in Business Analytics.
The Buffs will now look ahead to the 2016 season. The schedule is not set in its entirety but will begin in early January and culminate in March at the 2016 NCAA Championships, hosted by the Buffs and held in Steamboat Springs, Colo.
