November 28, 2005 – While the unseasonably warm weather in Alberta has been great for all, it has delayed snowmaking at the Canmore Nordic Centre, and raised some doubt about the ability to host the NorAm races on December 3 and 4.
Organizers have reviewed the current status with the Alberta Government, Cross Country Canada, and Cross Country Alberta, and will provide definitive notice of the Race on November 30th. The current weather forecast shows snow and more importantly a cooling trend starting on Saturday. With the colder weather, and the new snowmaking capacity at the Canmore Nordic Centre, courses should be in good condition by the morning of November 30th. Nevertheless, we do not recommend travel prior to the decision being announced.
On the 30th, the NorAm will either be confirmed or cancelled outright. The Alberta Cup scheduled for the same dates, will either be confirmed or postponed to the following weekend.
While the lateness of the warm weather has impacted the NorAm, the new course system in Canmore provides a highly flexible trail system over a very small footprint. When coupled with the new snowmaking capacities, we have excellent prospects of having sufficient trails and conditions for the World Cup. Organizers are reporting to FIS on a regular basis and snowmaking progress is being closely monitored. Contingencies are being developed with the Alberta Government to ensure acceptable conditions for the Alberta Centennial World Cup races scheduled on Dec 15th 17th and 18th.
