April 01, 2018 – With the popularity of fat biking in North America and Europe FIS officials have decided to launch a new FIS Fat Bike Race Series to extend the season as many cross-country skiers are eager to jump on the fat steeds as well.
“It’s no secret that cross-country skiers love fat-biking and the popularity of the sport is at an all time high,” said a FIS official. “We’ve been watching it grow both here in Europe, North America and even South America, Iceland etc. We’ve already seen interest from 12 nations who love the idea.” Even retiring stars like Kikkan Randall may participate. “My husband Jeff used to work at the bike shop that introduced the first fat bikes here in Alaska. We love the idea of getting more people on snow and cycling is close to so many skier’s hearts.” Many xc ski areas like Nipika Mountain Resort, Mont-Tremblant, Methow Valley and Canmore Nordic Centre are already on board. Quebec launched its first fatbike championships in 2015 and is a top tier choice for the new FIS Fat Bike Race Series.
