February 25, 2016 (Rasnov, Romania) – Warm temperatures greeted the athletes and coaches on Day 2 of the competitions at the FIS Nordic World Junior and U23 Championships, making for very tough individual start 5/10/15km classic races. The USA’s Katharine Ogden from Stratton Mountain School was the top North American in 13th in the Junior women’s 5km race, with teammate Julia Kern in 18th.
Marie Corriveau had the best Canadian result, finishing 37th as Norway’s Marte Johansen grabbed first by 5.3 seconds over teammate Lotta Weng in second with Germany’s Antonia Fraebel claiming third.
The Junior men’s 10km classic had similar results to the sprints on Monday as Norway’s Johannes Klaebo claimed his second victory, defeating Korea’s Magnus Kim by 11.2 seconds with Finland’s Lauri Lepisto in third. Cully Brown from the University of Vermont led the U.S. junior men in 35th while Canada’s Ryan Jackson was the top Canuck in 46th.
In the U23 women’s 10km classic individual start race Heather Mooney (Craftsbury Nordic Ski Club) led the North American women in 38th followed closely by Canada’s Frédérique Vézina in 39th. Russia’s Anastasia Sedova snatched first from Germany’s Victoria Carl by 13.1 seconds, followed by Czech Republic’s Petra Novakova in third.
Sweden’s Jens Burman dominated the U23 men’s 15k classic individual start, claiming the victory 26.8 seconds ahead of Russia’s Alexey Chervotkin and Norway’s Mikael Gunnulfsen in third.
Today’s racing wasn’t as strong as hoped for, with Scott Hill bringing home the best result overall, finishing in 36th place in the U23, 15k event. Jack Carlyle was 42nd, Alexis Dumas 53rd and Julien Locke was DSQ for a classic technique rule violation.
Three U23 U.S. men were in the top 30 as Northern Michigan University’s Adam Martin finished 23rd, Patrick Caldwell (Stratton Mountain School) finished close behind in 27th followed by Kyle Bratrud (CXC Team) in 29th. Scott Hill brought home Canada’s best result overall, finishing in 36th.
