Red Deer has been selected as the host community for the 2019 Canada Winter Games by the province of Alberta and the Canada Games Council. Welcoming the best young developing athletes from across our nation’s provinces and territories, the Game’s lasting legacy continues to be the catalyst for the growth of sport and recreation across the country.

The 2019 Canada Winter Games Host Society presents the following four year employment opportunity:

CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER

The Chief Executive Officer of the 2019 Canada Winter Games is accountable to and works closely with the Red Deer Host Society Board of Directors. The CEO supports the Chair in advising the Board of Directors providing leadership and ensuring effective implementation of the board’s strategic vision and mandate for the 2019 Canada Winter Games.

Key Accountabilities:

The CEO will be held accountable to:
• Provide strategic leadership by:

o establishing direction for the games,
o building alignment and commitment to the vision and strategic goals,
o ensuring execution and accountability through effective talent management strategies that will ensure the recruitment and retention of the staff and volunteer workforce
o lead by example to motivate, inspire and create a positive work environment; and
o effective community engagement.

•  Oversee financial management in the pursuit of established fundraising goals and the establishment and adherence to approved budgets;
•  Create a culture of safety by establishing a framework of risk management;
•  Establish and maintain positive, effective and influential relationships with key stakeholders necessary for the successful execution and operation of the games.

Qualifications:

Successful Candidates will meet or exceed the following criteria:
•  A track record of success at a Chief Executive, Managing Partner or equivalent senior executive level in a professional services, complex commercial environment, not for profit, or major events management.
•  Exceptional skills in managing a diverse range of internal and external stakeholders.
•  Excellent communication, negotiation, financial management (operating budgets of ~ $30M), people management, risk management and change management skills.
•  University degree in Sport, Business Administration or related discipline, with ten or more years of progressively more responsible managerial experience.
•  Demonstrated project management experience with the ability to motivate and direct a high number of broad, complex and diverse activities in a dynamic environment.
•  The following attributes will be considered assets:

o Demonstrated understanding of the performance drivers, organizational context, and knowledge of the regulatory environment present within the framework of executing a national summer/winter games event.
o Sport administration experience
o Familiarity with the community of Red Deer and province of Alberta
o Fluency in both English and French
o Experience in working in a political atmosphere
