Job Opportunity: Part-Time XC Ski Head Coach – Calgary Ski Club

June 26, 2010 (Calgary, AB) – The Calgary Ski Club (CSC) is seeking a Part-Time Cross Country Ski Head Coach to support and develop CSC’s cross country skiing program, focusing on recreation.  This position is focused on the following improving the skiing abilities of the CSC members including students in our lesson programs and recruiting and developing Assistant Coaches.

CSC is a growing organization and has always had a focus on enjoyment of the outdoors and having fun.  Our CSC Council works collaboratively and fosters camaraderie.  The part-time Head Coach reports directly to the Cross Country Skiing Director, a key member of the Council.  You will be treated with respect and you have the support of the Council to ensure you have the tools and necessary resources you need to be successful.

CSC’s Cross Country Ski Programs
The Head Coach, in consultation with the Cross Country Skiing Director, will develop a coordinated work plan for these cross country ski programs:

– Dryland Ski Fitness for adults, youth, and jackrabbits
– Cross country ski lessons including “Never-Ever/Hardly-Ever Skied Before”, “Learn to Classic Ski”, “Learn to Skate Ski”
– “Family Fun & Fitness”
– Cross country ski training including “Learn to Loppet” and  “Learn to Birkebeiner”  (Note: these lesson programs are run in conjunction with the University of Calgary as a joint venture)
– Cross country weekend ski clinics, including “Learn To Tour”

Development and Mentoring of Assistant Coaches
– Recruit Assistant Coaches (Note: the CSC currently has a limited number of Assistant Coaches; to offer the desired programs for our members, we must recruit additional Assistant Coaches)
– Train new coaches (Introduction to Community Coaching, etc.)
– Develop the skill level of all Assistant Coaches

Leadership and Communication
– Keep abreast of the current trends in cross country skiing, coaching and instruction, including dryland training and lifestyle benefits of fitness; incorporate this knowledge into coaching practices, programs, and newsletters as required
– Develop and coordinate program guidelines, schedules and budgets with Council Directors and Assistant Coaches as required

Education
– The applicant will have the old or new NCCP or equivalent certification.  Preference will be given to applicants having NCCP Level 2 or Competitive Coach Introduction (CCI-L2T) training
– In lieu of the NCCP certification, international experience in cross country skiing or biathlon will be considered

Experience
– Demonstrated cross country ski coaching experience is required
– Previous experience in sport-related management and event management is an asset along with ability as a team builder, an independent worker, and effective communicator
– Experience in working with non-profit board organizations is also an asset

This is a six month term position from October 1, 2010 to March 31, 2011 based in Calgary, Alberta.  The position may continue for subsequent terms.  Remuneration is commensurate with experience and qualifications.  CSC may consider some incentive compensation in addition to a base salary for exceeding certain growth objectives for the club.  This will be discussed with short-listed candidates only.

The successful candidate will be required to have a police record check as part of the qualifications for the position.  The successful candidate will be required to sign the Coaching Association of Canada (CAC) coaching code of conduct and contract for this term position.
