We have also received substantial donations outside of the online campaign. We will have funds left over from the lighting project and my co-conspirators on this project (who would at this point prefer to remain anonymous) along with Kelly and Chanse have come up with another worthwhile project to honour Larry’s memory.
As you all know Larry’s passion was in seeing racers succeed in life – whether they were successful racers wasn’t the point – it was all about using racing to learn how to have fun on the snow – being active – and becoming better people. So many of you have expressed these sentiments in your comments. To get more people racing, we need to provide them with the opportunity to race. Highlands has always hosted at least one high level race per season, but there is a limit to the number of days that the resort can be shut down to the public and be financially viable.
Our plan is to use the excess funds to build a stadium that will allow us to host races while the resort is open to the public and have minimal interference with the general public. Those of you who have been to Highlands this year may have noticed some new trails that were developed for the World Junior Trials. Those combined with the Millennium loop and some new trails that we hope to develop in cooperation with our neighbours to the north will have a minimal impact on the general public. We plan on holding many races each year.
The new stadium will be on the field to the north of the groomer barn (also used for the biathlon range). It will require some extensive earth moving to provide a level start area, a lap / skiathlon exchange area with a 2% grade and a finish area with a 4% grade. The plan also includes some permanent fencing and facilities so that we can easily set up for races – and of course it will be lit.
We don’t have a budget for this work yet – but we are confident that we will be able to raise the funds to create the Larry Sinclair Stadium.
Please let your ski friends know about this additional venture.
