January 18, 2017 (Palmer, Alaska) – A ribbon-cutting ceremony on January 11 marked the opening of Government Peak Recreation Area with some major improvements reports the Frontiersman. A nearly $1 million lighting project that placed more than 100 LED light fixtures now lights the way for users over 4.5 miles of Nordic trails. The three loops are the first lighted trail system in the Mat-Su Valley.
Speaking to the Frontiersman, Borough Public affairs Director Patty Sullivan said “When the sun goes down, life isn’t over anymore…you can come out and click into your skis,” to the gathering of local officials and outdoor recreationalists. “You have five more hours added to your day.”The trail system lights are activated by a photocell when it gets dark, and will remain on until the 9p.m. closing time.
