Masters Claims 3rd World Title with Sprint Biathlon Gold on Day 6 at Para Nordic Worlds

release by U.S. Para Nordic Skiing

February 19, 2017 (Finsterau, Germany) – American Oksana Masters won her fourth medal of the week as she secured gold in the women’s sitting sprint-distance biathlon at the 2017 World Para Nordic Skiing Championships.

Masters won her third world title after standing atop the podium on two separate occasions earlier this week in cross-country sprint and long-distance cross-country. The two-time Paralympic Winter medalist came from behind after dropping two shots to Germany’s Anja Wicker to take the 6-kilometer sprint biathlon crown. This win marks Masters’ first biathlon world title.

“I am completely shocked. I entered this race with no expectations. I went from not being sure if I was going to be able to race the last two days to winning my first gold medal in biathlon. I’m so excited! I cannot wait to let this all soak in and race as hard as I can for one more race. It has been an amazing experience,” said Masters.

U.S. Army veteran Andy Soule (Pearland, Texas) executed a solid race, finishing just off the podium in fourth while teammate Aaron Pike (Park Rapids, Minnesota) shot clean to secure himself a fifth place finish in the 7.5km sprint biathlon event.
