March 14, 2019 (Ostersund, Sweden) – Team USA’s Susan Dunklee and Sean Doherty finished 13th in the first-ever single mixed relay event held at an IBU Biathlon World Championships. With one penalty and seven spare rounds the duo were 1:47.9 behind Norway who won historic gold.
Canada’s Emma Lunder and Scott Gow were 15th using 10 spare rounds finishing 2:24.8 behind Norway’s Johannes Thingnes Boe and Marte Olsbu Roeiseland who took the historic victory using six spare rounds. Italy’s Lukas Hofer and Dorothea Wierer were 13.4 seconds back for the silver with five spares, while Sweden’s Hanna Oeberg and Sebastian Samuelsson claimed the bronze using eight spares. “The single mixed relay is one of the most thrilling formats to race,” said Dunklee. “I like the challenge of pushing to the limit with sprinting and speed shooting. Sean and I both had a lot of fun out there today and look forward to more relay action Saturday.” Twenty-nine teams were on the starting line for this inaugural event and they were greeted by virtually windless conditions on the usually breezy Ostersund course. Following an off-day on Friday, the IBU World Championships resume with the men’s and women’s relays on Saturday. The women’s 4×6-kilometer relay kicks things off at 8:15 a.m. EDT, followed by the men’s 4×7.5km relay at 11:30 a.m. EDT.Results here.
