Speed Camp USSA Lake Placid 2014 Rocks

by Andy Newell

September 08, 2014 (Lake Placid, New York) – Speed Camp LP was a lot of fun and it was great to be able to connect with the skiing community here in the Lake Placid area. We had a big group of high school kids come over from Vermont and got to know some of the local skiers in the area so I was happy with the turn out and I’m excited to see Speed Camp grow each year.

Speed Camp is a perfect opportunity for skiers to come and learn some very different ski techniques specifically designed for speed and going fast. We typically start the group off with some foot agility and blasting AC DC to work on basic coordination and quickness and getting into the Speed Camp state of mind.

Then we hit the rollerski track to work on fast cornering, transitions, and race specific ski techniques. We like to finish things off by setting up some kind of obstacle course to test all the different skills the campers have learned.

It’s my goal to pump the kids up and give them the confidence they need to push their skiing to the next level. I try to get everyone, including myself, to crash at least once during the clinic… thats how we know we’re trying new things and having fun.

We have played around with different ideas to complement the Fast and Female events and Speed Camp feels like a good fit. It’s unique because we try to focus on the kinds of skills that a lot of younger skiers don’t get a chance to practice on a regular basis and if you pair that with Rock n Roll it’s a win win.

The US Ski Team men try to convey knowledge they’ve learned racing on the world cup and it’s great to see the campers try to push their skiing skills in a safe environment.

This year we were lucky to have NENSA and High Peaks Cyclery supply us with awesome bright yellow Speed Camp safety T’s.
