March 21, 2012 (Vermont) – On Sunday, March 18, American star Kikkan Randall, hoisted the Sprint Cup Globe to cheers and rounds of applause the world over as she made history becoming the first American women to win a World Cup overall title. The last time the US won a WCup title was 30 years prior in 1982 when the legendary Bill Koch from Vermont won the men’s overall crown. Mike Gallagher was the Head Coach of the US XC Ski Team at the time.
Fans and pundits will remember Kochie’s stunning historic silver in the men’s 30km CL six years earlier at the 1976 Olympic Games in Innesbruck, Austria. His coach at that time was none other than the legendary Marty Hall, who also coached Gallagher prior to him becoming the US Head Coach and taking Koch to new heights. Gallagher himself was on the US National team for 13 years and won nine titles. Peter Graves talks with Gallagher in this edition of the Gravy-Train to put Randall’s fabulous victory in perspective as she ended a 30-year drought in US Skiing… up next on the Gravy-Train Kikkan Randall.
