January 25, 2015 (Obertsdorf, GER) – Calgary’s Taylor Henrich, 19, became the first Canadian woman to capture a World Cup ski jumping medal, placing third in the HS106 normal hill competition in Oberstdorf, Germany with jumps of 93m and 95.5m scoring 228.6 points, after qualifying fourth. Henrich was the top qualifier on Sunday and placed 5th in Saturday’s World Cup.
“I’m really exited. I’m happy I jumped really well here. It’s actually been televised in Canada, so I’m pretty exited about that. Being able to be on the podium is just an awesome feeling. I’ve been training really hard and jumping really well in training I just wanted to compete the same way that I train.”
Daniela Iraschko-Stolz (AUT) made it 2-for-2 following up her win yesterday with a victory on Sunday with jumps of 97.5 m and 89.5 m for 234.3 points. Olympic Champion Carina Vogt got closer to her Austrian rival than in the first competition where she was second, with 96.5 m and 91 m jumps, but at the end she missed the win at home by a mere 0.6 points. Iraschko-Stolz won Saturday’s competition with inspiring jumps of 101.0 and 95.0 meters, scoring 245.2 points with Vogt second and Sara Takanashi (Jpn) in third.
Nita Englund of the U.S. Visa Women’s Ski Jumping Team placed a career-best seventh Saturday with 95.0 and 88.5 meter jumps scoring 211.4 points. On Sunday she placed 8th place flying 87.0 and 87.5 meters in her two jumps to score 194.7 points.
Englund’s team-mates had mixed results. Jessica Jerome had solid 16th and 17th place finishes in the two competitions, while Sarah Hendrickson placed 17th in Saturday’s competition and did not qualify for a second jump on Sunday.
Daniela Iraschko-Stolz now leads the overall World Cup with 442 points ahead of Sara Takanashi (401 points). Carina Vogt follows in third with 388 points.
The next World Cup competitions will take place next weekend in Hinzenbach (AUT).
