February 22, 2010 (Gilford and Plymouth, NH) – With lots of help from Gunstock Nordic Association the TD Bank Silver Fox Trot was a great success. Racers enjoyed a 5km loop enhanced by Gunstock’s snowmaking efforts. Originally scheduled for Hanover, New Hampshire, the wonderful Ford Sayre Ski Club crew travelled down and kept their hosting duties for today’s event.
Justin Freeman (Holderness Nordic Club) won by a 21-second margin over Jeurgen Uhl, of Craftsbury Nordic in the men’s 15km classic event. Biathlete Russell Currier (MWSC) was another 45seconds behind, in 3rd place.
In the women’s 10km classic, it was Isabel Caldwell of Stratton Mountain School, squeaking in 5 seconds ahead of Colby College’s Olga Golovkina, while Kaitlyn Miller (Craftsbury Nordic) was 3rd.
Cheri Walsh Memorial 5/10km freestyle
The final day of Junior Olympic Qualifying almost always features fast-paced racing and Sunday was no exception as the quick snow and short loop at Holderness School produced fast times and good points for those taking part.
The J2 Boys race started the day and featured no surprises with Patrick Caldwell (Ford Sayre) in Jack Hegman’s absence, winning the boys by a large margin. In the women’s 5km race J2 Corey Stock (CSU) continued her hot season with the overall women’s victory over teammate Alex Jospe and Stratton Mountain School’s Isabel Caldwell.
On the men’s side Fred Bailey (Maine WSC) surprised many with a fast performance and the win for the men, out-skiing biathlete Russell Currier and Justin Freeman.
The 2010 TD Bank Eastern Cup champions were also crowned after Sunday’s races. Isabel Caldwell from Stratton Mountain School took over the title from her sister Sophie, securing the win with a first- and third-place finish this weekend. This marks the third straight year that the Caldwell sisters have earned the title. Gage Fichter (Stratton) was third.
For the men, Ben Koons, in Whistler competing in the Olympics for New Zealand, had already secured the overall crown. Freeman with a first- and third-place finish this weekend grabbed second, and Russell Currier with a third and second this weekend earned third.
Many thanks to the crew at Holderness School for pulling together a great day in very challenging conditions. The many hours of work it took to pull the course together is appreciated by all. Also, Sunday’s quick and accurate timing allowed for all standings to be calculated and announced quickly.
NENSA would like to also thank TD Bank for sponsoring this series and for all of the competitors, coaches, and parents who supported it by coming out to all four weekends at clubs across New England.
