January 22, 2014 (Park City, Utah) – The U.S. Ski and Snowboard Association held a teleconference call today prior to announcing the US Olympic Cross Country and Nordic Combined teams for the Sochi 2014 Games running from Feb. 7-23.
The 14 cross-country ski athletes may be the best team ever assembled for the Games as they attempt to bring home some hardware and add to the lone historic xc Olympic silver medal won by Bill Koch at the 1976 Games in Innesbruck, Austria. Head Coach Chris Grover talks about the process of selection, the plans for the chosen athletes, and the disappointments emphasizing that no discretionary selections were made.
The US Nordic Combined team was the talk of the town at Vancouver 2010 winning Olympic gold courtesy of Billy Demong, two silvers via Johnny Spillane and team gold for a historic Games. These were the first US Olympic medals in the discipline for the past 86 years. But Sochi 2014 is a different ballgame with Spillane retired, Todd Lodwick recently injured, and the team still trying to reach the lofty heights from 2010. Still Head Coach Dave Jarrett is optimistic on the team’s chances in Sochi…
