April 29, 2016 (Sovereign Lake, BC) – Now that the sunny days of Spring are here, most people have shifted their focus to cycling, running, paddling and golfing. Cross country skiing is not on the minds of the vast majority of outdoor sport enthusiasts. For a unique community of athletes, however, skiing is always on their minds. Just one month after the National Championships, and a month’s break away from regular scheduled training, May 12-15 2016 will see Sovereign Lake Nordic Centre host the Spring Fling annual spring training camp for those athletes who are passionate about skiing, and want to be back on the snow.
Sovereign Lake Nordic Centre, nestled high above the city of Vernon, is ready to provide all the skiing that an athlete could want after a month of recovery. Sitting at a base elevation of 1670m, SLNC is capable of retaining a significant amount of snowfall late into spring. With an exceptional winter of endless snow-days over the 2015/16 season, the accumulated snow is holding up much better than initially anticipated, with nearly 80cm still adjacent to the day lodge.
Sovereign Lake Nordic Centre will be open May 12-15, 2016 for the annual Spring Fling event. With a minimum of 15km daily of groomed classic and skate skiing, SLNC is one of the few public facilities in the world that can offer guaranteed product this late into the spring season. The facility will be open from 7am to 2pm on these dates only. A scheduled fun sprint race will take place on Saturday May 14th at 10am. Pre-registration is mandatory for the entire 4-day event.
Ski trails were inspected yesterday with the snowpack density and depth exceeding expectations with nearly 1.5m still remaining on the upper trails. There will be no additional grooming of these trails until 2 days prior the event as we need to ensure that the snow remains cold over the next 3 weeks.
With over 100 people already confirmed to attend, we anticipate numbers upwards of 250 skiers for this upcoming camp. For more information please contact Troy Hudson (General Manager) at (250) 558-8916 or via email at troy@sovereignlake.com.
