USA’s Dunklee 11th and Canada’s Crawford 15th in Women’s Mass Start as France’s Dorin Habert Claims 3rd Gold at IBU Worlds

March 14, 2016 (Oslo, Norway) – The USA’s Susan Dunklee was just out of the top ten finishing 11th, while Canada’s Rosanna Crawford was 15th in the women’s 12.5km mass start won by France’s Marie Dorin Habert, who shot clean for her third gold medal of the 2016 IBU Biathlon World Championships.

Germany’s Laura Dahlmeier, with one penalty, won the silver at 7.3 seconds back and Finland’s Kaisa Makarainen matched Dahlmeier on the shooting range but finished with the bronze medal at 8.1 seconds behind Dorin Habert.

“So close, once again, to fighting for a podium,” said Dunklee who missed three targets at 1:00.4 behind the winner. “Each of the races here in Oslo has boosted my confidence and made me more hungry to keep striving in the future. I was honored to race today alongside Hannah and will miss her and Annelies (Cook) tremendously in the future.”

Looking to feed off the energy of a historic Canadian men’s relay bronze on Saturday, Crawford who was high as eighth until two costly misses in her middle two rounds of shooting.

“Yesterday was an amazing day for our whole team. I really wanted to follow them up, but couldn’t quite make it happen,” said the 27-year-old, who began her season with a silver medal with Nathan Smith in the individual relay. “I was confident going into today’s race, knowing the skiing was there and the shooting had been feeling good all week. Both of my misses were just a bit positional errors, pulling the trigger a little too early.”

American Hannah Dreissigacker, competing at her final world championships, was 27th, with four penalties and a time of 38:43.9.

“Today wasn’t a perfect race for me but it was solid, and the atmosphere was amazing,” Dreissigacker added. “I had a lot of mixed emotions about it being my last race but I think it was the perfect way to end my biathlon career.”

Dorin Habert, who won a medal in every competition, commented on her success. “It is hard to find words to describe my feelings. I think today was very hard, I never thought I could have perfect shooting in the mass start, as I always had some mistakes during the season.”
