February 05, 2019 (Duntroon, Ont.) – The first day of the Haywood NorAm/Eastern Canadian Championships got underway on Feb. 1 with the AltaGas, classic sprints at Highlands Nordic in Duntroon, Ont. With temperatures a bit nippy, below -10 deg. C., it was a cool start for the qualifiers. Chelsea Nordiq’s Laura Leclair and Black Jack’s Julien Locke posted the fastest qualification times.
The women’s final saw Nakkertok’s Zoë Williams win over Laura Leclair with Mia Serratore of Big Thunder taking 3rd. Locke came through to win the men’s final ahead of Nakkertok’s Dominique Moncion-Groulx and last weekend’s Lake Placid SuperTour sprint winner, Antoine Briand of Skibec. The junior women’s race was won by Heidi Stewart of Big Thunder over Shaylynn Loewen of Georgian Nordic Ski & Canoe Club in 2nd and Bronwyn Williams of Nakkertok in 3rd.Nakkertok’s Pierre Grall-Johnson was the top junior man, followed by Mono Nordic’s Alexander Maycock in 2nd and another Nakkertok skier, John Lindfors, taking 3rd.
Day Two on Saturday Feb. 2 features interval-start, classic racing.
