February 05, 2019 (Duntroon, Ont.) – It was a warmer day at Highlands Nordic on Saturday as the interval-start Classic races got underway. In the Senior Women’s 10km race, Nakkertok’s Zoë Williams came through with her second NorAm win in a row at 37 seconds ahead of Big Thunder’s Mia Serratore. Chelsea Nordiq’s Laura Leclair crossed the line in 3rd 40 seconds later.
For the Junior women’s race the top two were Nakkertok skiers with Tove Halvorsen in first and Zoë’s sister Bronwyn in second. Third place went to Liliane Gagnon of Skibec, with the three juniors finishing 7th, 8th and 9th in the Open Women’s category.Skibec’s Alexis Dumas was the Senior Men’s 15km CL winner by 16 seconds, primarily based on a strong second lap. Lappe Nordic’s Andy Shields finish second followed by another Skibec skier, Phil Boucher.
For the junior men it was Pierre Grall-Johnson of Nakkertok adding a classic distance victory to Friday’s sprint win, ahead of Olivier Léveillé of Orford in second and Nakkertok’s John Lindfors in third. On the men’s side Sunday’s pursuit skate race will be quite interesting, with Dumas having a 16 second lead over Shields, and a pack of skiers another 15 seconds or so farther back. In the women’s race, Zoë Williams has a pretty commanding lead of 37 seconds over 2nd place Serratore. Leclair and Annika Richardson start together another 40 seconds back, but look to make a move for at least silver. Weather could be a bit of a factor with some “mixed precipitation” and rain scheduled for the morning and early afternoon.
