Sophie Caldwell from Peru, Vermont claims that learning to walk and learning to ski happened simultaneously. As a member of one of the East Coast’s legendary Nordic families her parents encouraged her to try all kinds of sports, but she eventually decided to focus on skiing, attending Stratton Mountain School for high school and then skiing for four years at Dartmouth College. With five All-America honors and two NCAA Championship podiums during her senior year she was also a runner-up at the national championships and finished 9th in the classic sprint at the U23 Worlds. In her second season with the USST, Caldwell debuted at Sochi 2014 earning the best all-time US Olympic women’s XC ski result with her 6th place in the CL sprint and went on to claim her first individual sprint FR World Cup podium placing third in Lahti, Finland. An A-Team member she hopes to build on her momentum… “I gained a lot of confidence and experience this year and we have a pretty incredible team.”
In her unique daily training blog Caldwell details her daily activities to keep fit and perform. Each entry is colour-coded as to training zones – Zone 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 or Recovery for easy reference and Sophie will also answer questions from readers. – Zone three skate intervals up at Bachelor! Felt good to do my first official interval session of the year, but I’m going to have some tired legs tomorrow. In the afternoon we went for a zone one run out at Smith Rock.
– I took this morning off because I was pretty wiped from yesterday’s huge day of training. In the morning I took a walk down to the grocery store and in the afternoon I went for a zone 1 run and did some core strength.
– Easy distance zone one ski in the morning with some drills. In the afternoon we went for a fun mountain bike, but got caught in the cold snow and ended up spending a little longer out there than we anticipated! Going to take a bit to warm up and I might end up cutting tomorrow a little short because of this adventure.
– Long classic ski in the morning. Beautiful weather up at Bachelor unfortunately also usually means for some soft skiing. Slow kicking by the end of the ski, but boy was it a nice day to be outside! In the afternoon we did a zone 1 jog followed by strength. Might be a little sore tomorrow!
– Worst travel day ever! I woke up early to catch my 6:30 am flight from san jose, but the flight was delayed, so I missed my connection in Chicago. After another delayed flight, a cancelled flight, a bus ride, and an airport sleep, I made it home at 7:30 the next morning. Still so nice to be home!
– Another fun day at Erika’s bachelorette party! We had a relaxing morning on the beach, went to a wine tasting, did a little swimming, and went for a nice beach walk before heading to bed and packing for an early morning tomorrow.
– Woke up to early mornig surf lessons at Erika’s bach party! This was the most fun I’ve ever had surfing. We stayed in the water for a couple hours until we could barely move our arm and then had a relaxing afternoon at the beach house.
– After a good night of sleep on the sail boat, Sim and I took our mountain bikes for a ride around L.A. In the afternoon I headed to the airport to catch my flight up to San Jose for Erika’s bachelorette party!
– Early morning wake up to go for an awesome run with Simi and our friend Linden in Santa Barbara. We started the run with headlamps and got to see the beautiful sunsirse over the city. I am going to be SORE! We had a nice big breakfast when we got back and then headed to L.A. to go for an evening sail boat ride with some of our friends who have a boat there. We got to spend the night on the boat!
– Really nice to sleep in a real bed after a week of camping! After we woke up and had breakfast, we headed to the ocean for some surfing. I was not very good, but I enjoyed the experience, thanks to my wetsuit!
– Woke up to what was going to be a big back country adventure to find the mountain totally socked in and some wild winds. Instead, we went down to Bishop and did some climbing before heading to Santa Barbara for a few days.
– Quick ride in the morning on some of the slick rock right outside of our campsite. It felt good to do some exercise before spending the whole day in the car driving to California.
– Awesome morning ride with Izzy and Molly in Moab. We found some trails that were within our comfort zone, but still tested us a bit. It was really fun to go with the girls. In the afternoon we went for a nice hike that got us high above Moab before heading back to our campsite for the night!
– We woke up in Fruita this morning and drove to Moab to meet up with my sister. After spedning awhile looking for a campsite, we finally found a gem and then took our bikes for a spin. The riding in the beginning was a little difficult, but by the end we found some easier trails to rip around on.
– We drove down to Fruita early this morning and rode for a few hours out at 18 road. When I road here last fall, I had a really hard time, but I felt like I was riding better today and we found some of the easier trails, so it was really fun. We grabbed some pizza in town and then went out to find a campsite.
– We woke up early this morning to go on a big back country ski, but when we woke up it was raining, so we decided not to ski. Instead we went climbing this afternoon and narrowly dodged the afternoon rainstorms!
– Relaxing day in Colorado. We tried to get organized today for our trip to the desert and took advantage of having some down time and a full day off.
– After a big weekend of skiing at the cabin, we had a relaxing morning to sleep in and take care of some computer work. In the afternoon I went for a really fun zone one mountain bike with Jenny and Sim down in Carbondale. It’s pretty crazy how easy it is to access any season here!
– Last race of the season…30k skate! I actually had a lot of fun in this race. I used to really dislike skate distance racing, but it hasn’t felt as bad this year and I got to ski almost the entire race with my teammate Annie! She did the majority of the pulling, but it was fun to take turns and encourage each other, working together to both have good days! And that’s a wrap….thanks for following this season!
– Final rest day of the championships with the 30k skate tomorrow! I went up to the venue in the morning to test some skate skis and go for an easy ski with Annie. In the afternoon I just rested and tried to fuel up for tomorrow’s long race in the morning!
– Club relay day! I went for a little jog this morning and then got ready for the annual club relay. We painted our faces in style and came away with the win for the first time ever. So psyched! A lot of our team was sick, but we were lucky to have four healthy people and Ben and I did the classic legs while Jess and Sim did the skate legs. Pretty fun day!
– Off day from racing in Fairbanks. I was feeling pretty tired after yesterday’s races, so I went to the coffee shop with the girls this morning and went for a little walk this afternoon. Looking forward to the club relay tomorrow evening!
– Sprint day at nationals. Went for a nice jog in the morning with a bunch of the girls and then packed up for a long day at the venue. It was a long hard sprint course and I was wiped by the end, but it was a great event and I’m ready for a big sleep!
– Slept in this morning and took it very easy. I am stiff and tired after yesterday! In the afternoon I went up to the venue and did a very easy walk around in skate skis and tested a couple pairs of skis.
– In the morning I went for a nice chilly jog with annie and Erika from our hotel. First day of racing up in Fairbanks in the evening and it was not my best. Skiathlons are tricky races for me. I had great skis, but I struggle to classic ski in skiathlon boots and then to feel good skating after making the transition. It was a bit of a struggle, but I’m glad we got it out of the way!
– Woke up to a cold beautiful day in Fairbanks. In the morning we slept in and then went on a grocery store run to stock up for the week. In the afternoon we got our skis organized and then headed up to the venue to do some ski testing and race prep. The courses are hard, but fun and I’m looking forward to the 15km skiathlon tomorrow evening!
– Long, but easy travel day to Fairbanks. I left my house at 7am, and didn’t get to out hotel until 12am, but I was tired enough to pass out for a good night of sleep. Psyched to be here for Spring Series!
– Spent my morning getting unpacking from Canada and beginning to think about repacking for the next month…stressful! In the afternoon I got out for an easy classic ski on the trails at wild wings. I love skiing there on the winding single track trails. Probably my favorite place to ski in the world!
– Recovery/off day. I went for a nice walk at home but was feeling pretty tired, so decided to take the day off from training. I figure at this point in the season, the best thing I can do is recover in order to not get too tired before the last races. All the hard work is done, and now it’s time to rest up and hop in some fun races before it’s officiallly spring!
– Birthday day! I woke up early to drive sim to the airport and on the way home went for a really nice zone one ski with Erika at prospect. After that I had a relaxing afternoon and went out to pizza and cake with my family!
– Pretty lazy day at home doing some organizing, but Sim and I went out for a really fun zone 1 classic ski on the Wild Wings trails right by our house. I used my Fischer twin skins and it almost felt like back country skiing through the single track woodsy trails. Nice to get out and get some fresh air, but man am I tired from three races in a row!
– And the World Cup season is complete! Pretty awesome to end the season up in Quebec city. It’s about as close to home turf as we can get on the World Cup. We slept in a little this morning and then spent the day driving back down to Vermont. I’m psyched to have the week at home before heading out to Spring Series.
– Double pole intervals to get ready for drammen! It was a beautiful day of skiing and I warmed up for my intervals with Liz on the tourist trails and then hammered out some double pole intervals. I chose some rolling fast terrain so that they wouldn’t be a huge aerobic effort, but I could get my muscles firing for the city sprint! In the afternoon I went down to spectate at the 50k. Exciting to watch Alex take the win!
