Benefit Organization: Girls Move Mountains
Girls Move Mountains’ mission is to nurture girls’ innate capacity for confidence, courage, and leadership through adventure-based experiential education.

Vision
We envision a world in which all girls are confident in who they are, filled with self-love and the power of self-definition, and able to be positive members of their communities as they become adults. However, our purpose doesn’t stop there. We want to see girls become agents of change. When girls are empowered and equipped for leadership and self-sufficiency their community changes in positive ways. While our work is about supporting girls to discover and utilize their full potential, ultimately we are committed to using our work as a vehicle for promoting social justice and grassroots social change.

History
The organization was founded in 2008, building upon eight years of a successful girls’ mountain bike program called Dirt Divas. Dirt Divas was created in 2001 by Vermont educators Nadine Budbill and Jessica Graham who saw a need for creative approaches to empowering adolescent girls. From 2001-2008 Dirt Divas served 110 girls as a small, community-based program operating solely in Morrisville. Girls Move Mountains was created as a parent organization to support the expansion of Dirt Divas and the development of other adventure-based empowerment programs for girls. Since 2008 we have undertaken major expansion with the addition of five new Dirt Divas sites and the development/implementation of a new multi-sport school-year program and a new girls’ rock climbing program. Additionally, we have expanded offerings with adventure clinics for adult women, which raise funds to support our work with girls. In 2010 we will have served 120 girls in Lamoille, Caledonia, Washington, Orleans, and Chittenden Counties. We have been highly successful in engaging a population of girls who wouldn’t otherwise have access to these types of experiences.

Moving forward….
Using adventure based experiential education Girls Move Mountains responds to the known challenges faced by adolescent girls in Vermont. Research shows that girls have many strengths and can be very resilient, but they still face barriers to overall well-being as indicated by reports of persistent gender stereotypes, low self-esteem, depression, poor body image, and disordered eating. Particularly in the rural communities of northern Vermont, poverty and geographical isolation combine to exacerbate these issues. It is critical that girls have access to experiences and supports that develop the skills they need to be resilient and successfully navigate adolescence. In particular, Girls Move Mountains addresses girls’ need for positive role models/mentors, safe spaces in which to discuss and get support around the challenges they face, engagement in physical activity, and productive experiences that keep them physically active, intellectually engaged, and socially connected when they are not in school.
