2008 Besh Cup Finale – Flaherty and Fitzergerald Win Overall

by Jeff Ellis

February 12, 2008 (Anchorage, Alaska) – Due to the continued cold temperatures in Interior Alaska, the final two Besh Cup races this past weekend were moved to Eagle River located just outside Anchorage. After the previous postponement the Eagle River Nordic Ski Club put forward a proposal to hold the races at Chugiak High School if the temperatures did not rise in the Fairbanks area. Based on the long the range forecasts at the start of last week the decision was made to move the final two races to the Beach Lake Ski trails.

Alaska Pacific University Nordic Ski (APUNSC) team member Tyson Flaherty continued his dominance winning both of the final two races to take the senior men’s Besh Cup top spot. On the senior women’s side Kate Fitzgerald (APUNSC) held on to take the top step.

With her win on Saturday Becca Rorabaugh (APUNSC), secured her points victory over Amy Glen of the Alaskan Winter Stars (AWS) team by just 20 pointts. Both ladies will be representing the state at the upcoming Junior Nationals.

At the conclusion of Sunday’s race, Team Alaska was announced at Chugiak High School for the 2008 USSA Junior Olympics and 2008 Arctic Winter Games.

The Besh Cup highlights Alaska’s best and the series is used to select athletes for the Junior Nationals (also know as JO’s, for Junior Olympics), and the Artic Winter Games teams. Each race regularly draws approximately 300 racers from across the state.
