2008 Junior Olympics – Day 2

Freestyle Interval Start Races

by Jeff Ellis

March 13, 2008 (Anchorage, Alaska) – Wednesday’s freestyle interval start races at the 2008 USSA Junior Olympics Cross Country Ski Championships received a much needed dose of new snow. Overnight and into the early morning Anchorage’s Kincaid Park received three inches of new snow covering the many icy and water logged portions of trail. According to Alaskan Kikkan Randall, a two-time Olympian and recent World Cup gold medallist, the new snow has, “returned the Kincaid trails to excellent race conditions”.

With two days of racing to go, it appears Mother Nature is now going to do her part to make sure this week of racing is a success. With new snow in the forecast and daytime temperatures at around freezing the 200 or so NSAA (Nordic Ski Association of Anchorage) volunteers can breathe easier.

After days of shoveling and at times using sump pumps to drain water from the main stadium it appears all of those efforts will result in great conditions for the nation’s best juniors to race for top spots. The freestyle races saw a new batch of athletes step on to the podium.
