May 30, 2011 – As part of the IOC “Young Ambassadors” project, the Canadian Olympic Committee (COC) is seeking an individual between the ages of 18 to 25 to fill the role of Young Ambassador for the Canadian delegation attending the 1st ever Winter Youth Olympic Games (WYOG) to be held in Innsbruck, Austria, January 13th – 22nd, 2012.
The vision of the YOG is to inspire young people to participate in sport and adopt and live by the Olympic values. The mission of the Innsbruck organizing committee (IYOGOC) is to organize an event to educate, engage and influence young athletes inspiring them to play an active role in their communities. Canada’s delegation of approximately 70 athletes from the ages of 14-18 will participate in 46 events across 15 sport disciplines.
Unique to the WYOG will be the inclusion of a Cultural and Educational Program that will educate, engage and influence athletes to be true to the spirit of the Olympic Movement by adopting the Olympic values of Excellence, Friendship and Respect and playing active roles in their communities. Athletes will learn about important global and sport issues and contribute to the environment and society while interacting with other your people from all over the world in celebration of the Olympic Movement and its values.
The role of the Young Ambassador will be to motivate the Canadian Youth Olympic Team to take maximum advantage of the WYOG and in particular the cultural and educational activities.
Job Description – WYOG Young Ambassador
Mission
The Young Ambassador promotes the WYOG Culture and Education Programme (CEP) to young people in general and the athletes qualified from his/her National Olympic Committee (NOC) in particular.
Description of Responsibilities
He/she is involved in the educational and communications activities initiated by the International Olympic Committee (IOC), IYOGOC and the COC as applicable.
Before the YOG
– He/she motivates and informs the young athletes qualified about the WYOG Culture and Education Programme
– He/she may become involved in the COC Communication efforts in promoting the WYOG
– He/she participates in a meeting held in parallel to that of the Chefs de Mission seminar to be held in Innsbruck, Austria Sept 1-4, 2011 to assist with the
– Preparation for the Ambassadors programme during the YOG
– Presentation of the CEP activities
During the YOG
– He/she is part of the COC Mission Team and reports directly to the Canadian Youth Olympic Team (CYOT) Program Manager
– He/she remains for the duration of the YOG
– He/she assists with the daily administrative duties associated with the Canadian delegation.
– He/she assists with daily communications for posting on the COC website.
– He/she promotes the CEP to the CYOT athletes
– He/she participates in the cultural and educational activities as developed by IYOGOC
– He/she carries out other duties as directed by the COC
– After the YOG
– He/she produces a YOG report
– He/she may be asked to take part in the COC promotion of the YOG
Profile
As the scope of action of a Young Ambassador lies in the fields of education and communication, he/she must be a good communicator with a strong interest in education. As his/her audience will be essentially aged 14 to 18, he/she must be connected with youth, outreach and the sporting world.
– An ambassador must be between the ages 18 to 25 (as of January 2012)
– Connected to young people (used to supervising or working with young people)
– Speaks fluent English and French
– Is an active or retired athlete, or has a strong interest in sport
– Education/Career in the fields of education or communications
– Good communicator
– Available to travel to Innsbruck in the first week of Sept.2011 (1-4 Sept) and for the period of the WYOG (Jan 8 – 23, 2012, dates subject to change).
Notes
The Young Ambassador is a volunteer position. All costs associated with travel, accommodation and meals will be covered by the Canadian Olympic Committee.
