A First in Canada: Entertainment Technology Set to Transform the World of Sport

release by SIRC

November 18, 2009 (Victoria, BC) – Victoria sport scientists are eagerly anticipating the arrival of Netherlands technology innovator XSens Technologies B.V. The company has decided to make their only stop in Canada to introduce the MVN BIOMCH camera-less 3D human motion measurement system at the Sport Innovation Centre (SPIN Centre) in Victoria.

EA Sports and Sony Pictures Imageworks have worked with XSens for video game and film production projects. Bringing this new technology into the sport science environment means that high performance athletes will no longer be confined to laboratory spaces for biomechanical assessment. This real-time analysis enables the optimisation of skilled body movements to take place in the field enhancing an athlete’s chance of success. The information and biomechanical data derived from these sessions will also be used to propel innovations in many health and wellness areas.

Canadian Olympic and Paralympic teams will be provided with an opportunity to assess this innovative sport science technology first-hand. A live demonstration of the suit will be given by XSens at the Pacific Institute for Sport Excellence on November 18th. The Sport Innovation Centre and Canadian Sport Centre Pacific will be on hand to facilitate the event. Session times will be announced closer to the event. Media are welcome to attend, but please RSVP by November 17th.
