Alberta World Cup Society Welcomes New President

July 02, 2010 (Canmore, AB) – The Alberta World Cup Cross Country Society is pleased to announce the election of Norbert Meier to the position of President. In doing so, the Society also wishes to extend its sincere and heartfelt thanks to Dale Swanson for his leadership and dedication.

The Society achieved great acclaim with the successful hosting of the 2010 cross-country skiing world cup races in Canmore, featuring a bronze medal finish in the classic sprint by Canada’s Sara Renner. The event attracted 8,000 spectators to the Canmore Nordic Centre Provincial Park and achieved a daily television viewing audience of 22 million people world-wide.

As the new President of the Society, Norbert will continue the direction of the Society in hosting world-level cross country skiing events. The development of volunteer officials will continue to be a high priority, enhancing the depth of event hosting capacity in Alberta communities. The Alberta World Cup Academy has been tremendously successful in producing medal-winning athletes and will also continue to be a top priority for the Society.

Norbert’s background includes executive and leadership roles in human resources and the hospitality industry. His educational background includes a BA (Economics) and an MBA (Organizational Behaviour). Norbert recently retired from an executive position at the Banff Centre for Continuing Education and currently operates his own executive coaching and consulting practice. As a masters high performance athlete, he races both nationally and internationally in cross country skiing. Norbert has been a member of the Society since 2004 and a member of the world cup organizing committee in 2005 and 2010.

The Alberta World Cup Cross Country Society was formed in 2004 and has successfully hosted world cup races at the Canmore Nordic Centre in 2005, 2008 and 2010. The Society is dedicated to hosting future world cup and world cup level races, and developing athletes, coaches and officials in the sport of cross country skiing.
