Ammann’s Ski Binding Legal

February 19, 2010 (Whistler, BC) – After the Large Hill Qualification round FIS released a

statement regarding the controversial binding of Switzerland’s Simon Ammann. FIS Race Director Austrian Walter Hofer commented, “At the request of the Swiss team leader the equipment control has been asked to check the competition equipment from Simon AMMANN (SUI) used in training and qualifications. They haven’t found any conflict existing with rules and specifications.” Hofer went on, “The jury has unanimously accepted and confirmed the evaluation of Jouko Törmänen from Finland who is Chairman of equipment control.”

Regarding the furor the controversial bindings have caused Ammann said, “I’m going to concentrate on the ski jump and stay cool. I was astonished at my first attempt this morning [142.5m in the Trial Round]. It is closer to ski flying on the big hill here.” Canada’s Read added, “I don’t think it’s illegal or anything. I think it’s just innovation in the sport.”
