July 4, 2008 – (Anchorage, AK) – Just a short two and a half weeks after their first glacier camp of the season, Alaska Pacific University’s (APU) AK-Elite team headed back up to the Lowell Thomas Training Center for a mini-four day camp. The training facility is located just 45 minutes south of Anchorage, on the edge of a glacier bowl known as Eagle Glacier. The AK-Elite team members split the week with APU’s junior program who completed their first camp of the summer.
A colder than average spring and early summer have made for incredible snow conditions. However, it was the weather that resulted in the AK-Elite team hiking up to the glacier, an ascent of approximately 5,000 ft. (1500m). High winds and low cloud made the usual 10 minute helicopter ride a no-go. The APU AK- Elite team will return to Eagle glacier in two weeks with the APU College Ski Team athletes.
