February 07, 2014 – The recent positive tests that saw three biathletes receive suspensions only a week before the Sochi Games, have been described by Don Catlin, the former head of the U.C.L.A. Olympic Analytical Laboratory, as just “the tip of the iceberg,” according to a New York Times article.

The two Russian and one Lithuanian biathletes were found to have a designer EPO-like substance in their samples.

According to Catlin, there were two biathletes who tested positive at the Salt Lake City Games in 2002, but their results were never disclosed and they were never sanctioned.

The New York Times article quotes US biathletes Sara Studebaker and Tim Burke, who calls for tougher sanctions for dopers.
