January 21, 2010 – A recent study in the New England Journal of Medicine on the effects of moderate, approved doses of EPO used therapeutically by people with diabetes, kidney disease, and anemia showed that the participants who were given EPO were more likely to have heart attacks and strokes than those in the placebo group. Despite these proven health risks of EPO used even at moderate, controlled doses, however, athletes intending to dope will continue to use the drug in order to achieve their goals, reported the New York Times today.
