by John Symon
December 4, 2007 – Canada’s Beckie Scott was appointed recently to an International Olympic Committee (IOC) panel monitoring preparations for the 2014 Winter Olympics to be hosted in Sochi, Russia according to CP. The 14-person panel will be chaired by Jean-Claude Killy, France’s skiing celebrity. Other panel members include: Ottavio Cinquanta, head of the International Skating Union; Rene Fasel, president of the international hockey federation; Gian-Franco Kasper, who leads the international ski association; Juan Antonio Samaranch Jr., son of the former IOC president; and Cesare Vaciago, who oversaw the 2006 Winter Games in Turin, Italy

Scott, 33, is now a retired cross-country skier. She won gold in the 5km individual pursuit at the 2002 Winter Games in Salt Lake City. Her third place finish was upgraded to gold after Russians Olga Danilova and runner-up Larissa Lazutina were disqualified for doping violations. Scott also competed at the 1998 Winter Olympic Games in Nagano, Japan, and the 2006 Winter Olympic Games in Turin, Italy.

Scott also made the news last month when she travelled as one of Canada’s three voting delegates to the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) conference in Madrid, Spain. The other two delegates were Helena Guergis, Canada’s Secretary of State for Sport, and Dick Pound, the outgoing President of WADA.
