January 05, 2014 (Oberhof, GER) – On the final day in Oberhof it Norway’s Tora Berger who celebrated the new year with her first victory this season suffering one penalty in the women’s 12.5km mass start race. The tight battle for second went to her teammate Synnøve Solemdal, who shot clean, but she faced a determined Darya Domracheva (Blr) who had two penalties and charged the line getting pipped by 0.3s.
Domracheva held the early lead shooting clean as Finland’s Kaisa Makarainnen soon threatened as Berger and Solemdal gained ground on them. The four entered the final standing session as Berger and Solemdal cleaned along with Germany’s Andrea Henkel who was also in the running.
Domracheva and Makarainnen faltered but the Belarus skier soon caught Henkel and went after Solemdal settling for third on the podium. No Canadians or Americans competed.
